Long term plans hardly work because we tend to change our plans often and don't give enough for our plans to materialize, most people bail out after one year of failure, to set long term plans, they have to accompany a short term plan.

Your 5 years goals should be linked with a 1 year goal that connects directly to the former goal, it becomes more achievable, because a year is just 12 months or 52 weeks and you can track your results easily.

Accountability helps also in reaching your goals, create a friends group or a system that helps you stay accountable.

A lot of long term plans fail simply because there is no drive on consistency. Having a long term goal means there needs to be a drive or reason that keeps you going. A lot of people get tired during this period and simply try something else. It's best to have shorter goals.
