We love oil palm plantations because they seem to be very lucrative the moment, but they have very serious consequences. First, they require a tremendous amount of space, water and time, anywhere from 3-4 years before the trees begin to bear fruits. It is difficult to manage within limited space, limited resources, or limited time at large. Besides, oil palm plantations would pose an adverse effect on the quality of the local soil, water and wildlife. Competition is also high and price is normally fixed by these big firms but small scale growers will earn well. Thus, unless you are endowed with a good preparation in case of any risks turn up; this business may not be for you.
