It's not easy trying to overcome language barriers while studying abroad. But it's a great chance to learn and equip yourself. These steps will help you greatly:

  1. Learning basic phrases before leaving your country will make things easy. It will help you in basic communication
  2. Local apps like Duolingo or babbel are great for quick practice.
  3. Have you heard of language exchange programs? Don't worry, many universities do it. You can learn from native speakers that are interested in your language
  4. Don't be afraid even when it feels awkward, you will adapt
  5. Google translate can also help you but don't let it hinder your learning by being too dependent on it.
  6. Partake in local activities.
  7. You can ask for help from course mates too.
Don't forget it takes time, but it's worth every bit of learning.

The best way to learn a language, whether abroad or locally wherever you live is to immerse yourself with the local culture, you can start partaking in their daily activities, go to their markets, haggle prices, take local transport, talk to an old woman, go to sport centers and hang out with the locals.

In no time, you'll be able to speak exactly like them, I understand that some people learn best in class rooms but nothing beats local experience.
